A note on our labeling: We're updating our Blue Lotus line to correctly reflect its true botanical identity. For some time, our labels — like most in the herbal market — named this plant Nymphaea caerulea, the Egyptian blue lotus. That wasn't intentional; it's a mislabeling that runs across the industry, and by most estimates, the vast majority of "blue lotus" sold in the U.S. is actually this Asian species, not the true Egyptian water lily. We appreciate your understanding as we correct our labeling and website to reflect what this plant actually is.
Asian Blue Lotus (Nymphaea nouchali) is the true "blue lotus" of South and Southeast Asia and the national flower of both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Known in Sanskrit as Utpala, Nīlotpala, Kumuda, and Indīvara, it has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Siddha traditions as a bitter tonic and cooling astringent, and to support digestion, liver health, urinary health, and healthy blood sugar. Revered in Buddhist tradition as one of the auspicious signs on the Buddha's footprint, it is distinct from the Egyptian blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). Early laboratory and animal research on this species suggests potential antioxidant, liver-supportive, blood sugar–supportive, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.* Human clinical studies have not yet been conducted.
Our Process: This tincture is built from three separate extractions of the same petals and stamens, recombined into one full-spectrum preparation. We first perform an absolute oil extraction. The remaining plant material then undergoes a full ethanol fraction extraction, and we separately steam-distill a hydrosol from the petals and stamens. All three — absolute, ethanol fraction, and hydrosol — are then recombined into the final tincture, so nothing extracted from the flower is left behind.
Please note: Laboratory and animal studies show that Nymphaea nouchali may lower blood sugar. If you take diabetes medications (such as metformin, insulin, sulfonylureas, or glitazones), consult your healthcare provider before use and monitor your blood glucose. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. May cause drowsiness; avoid combining with alcohol or sedatives and do not drive if affected.
